Selena Gomez said she is quitting social media for some time because of fake stories about her chat with Taylor Swift at the Golden Globe Awards. People online made fun of the chat and thought the 31-year-old Hulu star was talking bad about Kylie Jenner and Timothée Chalamet, but that was not true.

On Tuesday, January 9, Selena posted a video on her Instagram Stories of her boyfriend, Benny Blanco, having fun with two kids. In the Story, the Only Murders in the Building star said, “I’m off social media for a while. I’m focusing on what really matters.”

Selena did not say it, but fans saw that her social media break came soon after the Golden Globes gossip spread online. At the January 7 awards show, the “Single Soon” singer went to Taylor’s table to say something in her ear when there was a break. Many were curious about their chat, and some people who claimed to read lips thought Selena told Taylor, 34, that Timothée, 28, and Kylie, 26, did not want to take a photo with her.

But on January 9, the former Disney Channel star ended the rumours by writing on a social media post about the issue.

Noooooo I was talking to Taylor about two of my friends who got together. Not that it matters to anyone,” Selena said. Timothée also had to explain the truth after a TMZ reporter came to him and asked if there was any trouble between his girlfriend and Selena.

“Everything is fine,” the Wonka star said. He also answered if the Wizards of Waverly Place star and the Kardashians star were friends, and he said, “of course.”

Selena’s fame and influence have made her a target for online bullies. But she has handled it well, the “Lose You to Love Me” singer has had to clear up rumours in recent years. In August 2023, fans guessed over a lyric in Selena’s new song “Single Soon” and wondered if it was about her ex-boyfriend The Weeknd. She wrote on Hollywood Life’s Instagram post about the issue that the rumour “was totally false.”

For almost five years, the Golden Globe nominee was off social media and let her team do the posts. She talked about her choice in a 2021 interview with Elle.

“I don’t have it on my phone, so I don’t get tempted,” she said to the magazine. “I had to learn how to be alone. That was hard, because before, I could waste hours looking at other people’s lives. I would go back almost two years in someone’s feed, and then I’d think, ‘I don’t even know this person!’ Now, I get information the right way. When my friends have something to say, they call me and say, ‘Oh, I did this.’ They don’t say, ‘Wait, did you see my post?’”
